Nuveen Completes Schroders Acquisition to Create $2.6 trillion Investment Giant

Global investment manager Nuveen has completed its acquisition of Schroders, creating one of the world’s largest active asset managers with US$2.6 trillion in assets under management and a significant presence across fixed income, equities and private markets.

The transaction, completed on 1 October 2026, brings together two major investment management businesses operating across more than 40 markets, including Australia, the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The deal was announced earlier this year.

The combined organisation is the only investment manager ranked among the world’s top ten in active fixed income, active equities and private markets, providing considerable scale across public and private investment strategies.

The acquisition also creates a private markets platform managing approximately US$400 billion, with the business planning to organise its operations around individual asset classes.

Nuveen CEO William Huffman said the combination represented a significant opportunity to reshape the global investment management industry.

“Our landmark combination gives us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape our industry and to deliver a proposition to clients that hasn’t previously existed,” Huffman said.

The enlarged business is expected to strengthen its ability to provide institutional investors with investment solutions spanning traditional fixed income, private credit and other alternative asset classes.

For Australian institutional investors, the combination brings together two established investment managers with complementary capabilities across public and private debt markets.

The transaction also reflects the growing convergence between traditional fixed income management and private credit, as institutional investors increasingly consider opportunities across both markets when constructing portfolios.

Under the integration arrangements, Schroders will continue operating as a separate business within Nuveen for approximately 12 to 18 months.

Schroders Group Chief Executive Richard Oldfield will continue leading the business during this period, reporting directly to Huffman.

The combined organisation intends to retain existing investment teams across asset and wealth management during the initial integration period, providing continuity for clients.

Nuveen’s Saira Malik will serve as Chief Investment Officer, while Schroders’ Johanna Kyrklund will become Chief Investment Officer for Public Markets and Solutions, overseeing equities, fixed income, multi-asset investments and solutions.

Matt Oomen will lead global client coverage, responsible for connecting institutional and wealth clients with the expanded investment capabilities.

The acquisition is backed by Nuveen’s parent company, TIAA, the US retirement and financial services organisation.

The combined group plans to develop an integrated public-to-private investment platform, with a particular focus on retirement income solutions, insurance portfolio management and wealth management.

The transaction represents another significant consolidation in global asset management, bringing together substantial investment capabilities across traditional and alternative fixed income markets.
